A Loch is a large body of water which is fed by the rivers, streams and groundwater from the mountains and land around the highlands. Most lay in the flat land at the base of the mountains however there are smaller lochs which are often unmarked on maps and known locally in the glens. Lochs may be smaller or larger than tarns which are more often formed at the basses of cliffs and mountains.
